EIGHT
Goose bumps erupted on Cora’s arms as the mechanical shades continued their descent, closing off the panoramic view and effectively shutting her off from the rest of the world. Her pulse pounded in her ears, drowning out all other sounds. She was a captive in this house with Lance. He stood behind her.
Right behind her.
Much too close.
No matter how much she rubbed her arms, she couldn’t shake the chill, shake her fear.
What was he going to do with her now?
Before the shades had covered the window, she’d looked out, unable to enjoy the gorgeous view. But she’d stared into the woods and tried to hang on to the hope that Kirk would find her and save her life again, like he’d done so many times today. It seemed so surreal.
How long had it been since she’d first gone diving early this morning? More than twelve hours. How could so much have happened in such a short time?
Dusk had been closing in on the woods, much like danger was closing in around her. Darkness would descend much too soon.
God, help me out of this. Help me find a way to escape.
There was simply no way it was humanly possible for Kirk to find her, much less get her out of this mess. She would have to save herself. She wished she could have jumped from the car. Maybe she would have if Lance hadn’t sped up instead of slowing down, but as the road rushed beneath her, she’d known she would die if she jumped.
There had been no other chance to escape. Now here she was in the lion’s den.
Except Lance wanted her to believe he was protecting her.
Cora wasn’t sure what Lance expected of her. What he wanted from her. She moved away from him to stand in the center of the massive great room and took in the rustic decorations, including a few animal heads. Gross.
She was almost surprised he allowed her to step away from him. Allowed her the freedom. But it had to do with this facade that he was protecting her by bringing her here. She’d go along with Lance’s insistence that he was taking care of her, and that would give her time to make a plan to flee.
Why did people keep pretending they wanted to protect her? It wasn’t like she was a damsel in distress, yet, on the other hand, maybe anyone would need help surviving under the circumstances.
But since no one else was here she had to rely on her own devices to get out of this, if she could come up with something. And she suspected that her chances of escape diminished the longer she remained with this creep. Others affiliated with Lance and his plans would likely show up soon. But right now, she was alone with him and she had no choice but to try to take him out like she’d taken Judd out.
Did Lance know what she’d done to Judd? Was he the man on the other end
